Here at the Fantasy Hive we’re thrilled to host the cover reveal for Cameron Johnston’s forthcoming grimdark epic, The Traitor God. We’ve heard a LOT of exciting things about this bad boy!

The Book

First, here’s the official synopsis:

A city threatened by unimaginable horrors must trust their most hated outcast, or lose everything, in this crushing epic fantasy debut.

After ten years on the run, dodging daemons and debt, reviled magus Edrin Walker returns home to avenge the brutal murder of his friend. Lynas had uncovered a terrible secret, something that threatened to devour the entire city. He tried to warn the Arcanum, the mageocracy who rule the city. He failed.

Lynas was skinned alive and Walker felt every cut. Now nothing will stop him from finding the murderer. Magi, mortals, daemons, and even the gods – Walker will burn them all if he has to.

After all, it wouldn’t be the first time he’s killed a god…

The Cover

And here’s what we’ve all been waiting for: the gorgeous, almost Vagrant-esque cover itself!

So. Pretty.

The Traitor God’s cover was created by the incredibly talented Jan Weßbecher. Take a look deep into its full wrap and feel the creeping horror of the world you’ll hopefully soon take a plunge into…

Did I say ‘creeping horror’? Don’t worry; it’s not all doom and gloom! Angry Robot have assured us Cameron’s novel actually has some very lighthearted moments, as well as a cast of lovable characters they’re excited for readers to meet. There’s a very good reason The Traitor God made it on to the Hive’s ‘Most Anticipated‘ list at the beginning of the year, and that’s because we’re anticipating the hell out of it!

The Author

Here’s a bit more about the author, Cameron Johnston, who’ll also be dropping by the Hive next Tuesday with a guest post about his own love for hopeful grimdark.

Cameron Johnston lives in Glasgow, Scotland, with his wife and an extremely fluffy cat. He is a swordsman, a gamer, an enthusiast of archaeology, history and mythology, a builder of LEGO, and owns far too many books to fit on his shelves. He loves exploring ancient sites and camping out under the stars by a roaring fire.

The Traitor God is released on June 5th 2018. You can learn more on Angry Robot’s website, add the book to your Goodreads shelves here, visit the author’s website or follow him on Twitter. And be sure to drop by next week to catch Cameron’s guest post, ‘Love in the Age of Grimdark’!

This is how you do a cover reveal. Goddamn, it’s the dude walking away from an explosion without an explosion. I love how everything on the covers tells me about this guy and his personality: he’s pissed, he’s out for blood, and this pearly city is going to burn. Have to grab this ARC.

Right? Jan did an amazing job capturing his snarling disdain 🙂

Hi, yes? I’ll take one, thank you. Actually, how about three or four? Yeah. That sounds good.

Hi, I’m reading an ARC of this at the moment, and I can safely say that cover works in all sorts of ways. It really is a cracking book! You’re gonna love it.
