JADE LEGACY by Fonda Lee
Today I’m taking part in the Jade Legacy pre-order campaign kickoff! This is where fans of The Green Bone saga have been asked to share what they appreciate about their favourite character and why we’re excited for the upcoming final instalment, Jade Legacy.
Before I dive into my chosen character, Kaul Lan, I’ll just share the synopsis for the first two books Jade City and Jade War, in case anyone wants a brief reminder.
FAMILY IS DUTY. MAGIC IS POWER. HONOR IS EVERYTHING.
Jade is the lifeblood of the island of Kekon. It has been mined, traded, stolen, and killed for — and for centuries, honorable Green Bone warriors like the Kaul family have used it to enhance their magical abilities and defend the island from foreign invasion.
Now, the war is over and a new generation of Kauls vies for control of Kekon’s bustling capital city. They care about nothing but protecting their own, cornering the jade market, and defending the districts under their protection. Ancient tradition has little place in this rapidly changing nation.
When a powerful new drug emerges that lets anyone — even foreigners — wield jade, the simmering tension between the Kauls and the rival Ayt family erupts into open violence. The outcome of this clan war will determine the fate of all Green Bones — from their grandest patriarch to the lowliest motorcycle runner on the streets — and of Kekon itself.
Jade City begins an epic tale of family, honor, and those who live and die by the ancient laws of jade and blood.

MAGIC DIVIDES. POWER CORRUPTS. FAMILY ENDURES.
On the island of Kekon, the Kaul family is locked in a violent feud for control of the capital city and the supply of magical jade that endows trained Green Bone warriors with supernatural powers they alone have possessed for hundreds of years.
Beyond Kekon’s borders, war is brewing. Powerful foreign governments and mercenary criminal kingpins alike turn their eyes on the island nation. Jade, Kekon’s most prized resource, could make them rich—or give them the edge they’d need to topple their rivals.
Faced with threats on all sides, the Kaul family is forced to form new and dangerous alliances, confront enemies in the darkest streets and the tallest office towers, and put honor aside in order to do whatever it takes to ensure their own survival—and that of all the Green Bones of Kekon.
Jade War is the second book of the Green Bone Saga, an epic trilogy about family, honor, and those who live and die by the ancient laws of blood and jade.

Why do I appreciate Kaul Lan’s character?
Kaul Lan, is the older brother of Kaul Hilo and Kaul Shae and is the newly appointed Pillar of the No Peak clan. What I love most about Lan is his selflessness. He always strives to put the well-being and happiness of his family and clan before anything else.
Throughout Jade City Lan is at constant odds with trying to prove himself as a worthy Pillar, whilst trying to keep the peace between No Peak and the rival Mountain clan, and let’s just say his hot-headed brother Hilo doesn’t make this easy. Lan partakes in one-on-one duel with a Mountain assassin, becomes injured, experiences jade intolerance and ultimately falls into a drug addiction. At every turn Lan hides his true suffering from almost everyone, thinking he can never show weakness, that he must be strong to protect his family. Having only Anden, his adopted brother who is young and naive, to confide in, Lan is a character who I deeply felt for. I appreciated Lan because he deserved someone to be looking out for him.
Why am I excited for Jade Legacy?
Ever since I read Jade City I’ve been shouting about how wonderful and unique Lee’s story is. I adored the use of jade for the magic system, the thrilling martial arts scenes and the gangster-esque world. Her characters are heavily flawed, morally grey, but yet so likeable. It’s easy to love Lan’s loyalty, Hilo’s passionate protective nature, Shae’s strong willed stubbornness and Anden’s coming of age story arc.
Then in Jade War my love for the series cemented even further. Lee held me on the edge of my seat, wishing for the Kaul family to succeed and suffer no further tragedies. She built up to a highly dramatic climax which left tensions high.
So I’m looking forward to seeing how the conflicts between the No Peak clan and the Mountain clan will finally conclude in Jade Legacy, I’m hoping to see how the younger Kaul family such as Hilo’s children and nephew have grown under his tutelage. I’m very much excited for more jade magic, more gangster-esque politics and shenanigans, and seeing how the new alliances will fare. Most of all I’m looking forward to seeing more from my beloved Hilo, Shae and Anden.
One aspect I’m not looking forward to though is the heartbreak, of which I’m sure Fonda Lee has include plenty of. I’m convinced she loves to torture her readers!
