THE WRITE ADVICE – Mentoring

By The Fantasy Hive

We’re thrilled to welcome The Write Advice team, Justin Lee Anderson, Stephen Aryan, and Anna Stephens, to the Hive. Throughout June, they’ll be joining us weekly with their expert writing advice.

The Write Advice are a group of seasoned authors that provide support for writers on the path to publication. They focus on mentoring, guidance, editing, and feedback on submission packages. You can find them on their website, Twitter and Instagram.

Articles so far:

Week 1 – 4 Common Mistakes in Query Packages

Week 2 – Types of Edit

This week, Anna Stephens breaks down what mentoring services are available with the Write Advice, and how they can help you.

The Write Advice mentoring services

Here at The Write Advice, we offer monthly, quarterly, and one-off mentoring sessions for writers at all stages of their careers.

Mentoring can take many forms, and we work initially with our clients to discover how best to help them, and then offer appropriate support.

That support can take many forms, including but not limited to:

  • setting writing deadlines and challenges
  • storytelling elements e.g. developing characters, dialogue, setting
  • craft elements e.g. plot, theme, character arcs
  • editorial feedback on writing samples or chapters
  • research
  • help with approaching agents and/or sourcing professionals for independent publishing
  • general cheerleading

We believe that the opportunity to sit and talk about writing is almost as vital as the writing itself. Whether we collaboratively brainstorm our way out of your latest plot hole or deconstruct what makes a book (or movie, or TV show) great from a story perspective, having someone to bounce ideas off is not only helpful for writers in need of support. It’s fun, too.

And while we know that any writer can turn anything into procrastination if they try hard enough, we’ve discovered that talking about writing doesn’t just help people understand the craft better; it gives them the excitement and impetus to go away and do the work. Coupled with challenging but achievable targets, we’re already seeing our mentees make demonstrable progress.

Whether you’re looking for accountability, practical advice on craft, or someone to help you develop your characters and plot, mentoring with The Write Advice could be just the thing you need to get you on track and then keep you there.

Our flexible approach means that we can accommodate everything from a quarterly check in to ensure you hit your self-publishing deadlines to a monthly dive into how exactly your characters have set fire to your plot outline this time. If you need support for 12 months to finish your first book or just three to get you over that finish line, we’re here to help.

Anna Stephens is the author of the epic fantasy Godblind and Songs of the Drowned trilogies through HarperVoyager, and also writes for Black Library in their Age of Sigmar and Warhammer Horror imprints, as well as for Marvel Comics through their tie-in publisher, Aconyte Books.

These literary feats have been accomplished despite the nefarious intentions of Bailey the miniature poodle, who deploys his weapons-grade cuteness with irresponsible abandon.

As a black belt in Shotokan Karate and a once upon a time historical fencer, Anna’s no stranger to the feeling of being hit in the face, which is more help than you would expect when writing fight scenes.
