On Writing House of Dragons – GUEST POST by K. A. Linde (HOUSE OF DRAGONS)

Today we’re thrilled to welcome K. A. Linde back to the Hive ahead of the publication of her upcoming romantasy HOUSE OF DRAGONS. Before we hear more from her, let’s find out what she has in store for us with House of Dragons:

House of Dragons is an enemies-to-lovers, slow-burn romantasy that has been called ‘Fourth Wing meets Throne of Glass’, from No. 1 Sunday Times bestselling author K. A. Linde.

Ten years ago, half-Fae, half-human Kerrigan Argon was discreetly dropped off at the steps of Draco Mountain with nothing but a note. Her life changed completely as she was swept into the care of the House of Dragons – an elite training programme for gifted Fae.

On the year of their seventeenth name day, each student is chosen by one of the twelve tribes of Alandria to enter society. This year, everyone is chosen, except Kerrigan.

So, she strikes a bargain with the Dragon Society: convince a tribe to select her or give up her birthright forever. With the unlikeliest of allies – Fordham Ollivier, the cursed Fae prince who escaped his dark throne – she has to chart her own destiny to reshape the world.

Introducing the Royal Houses series: the story of Kerrigan Argon, a half-Fae, half-human, as she seeks her place in an unforgiving world filled with magic, mayhem and romance. Perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas, Holly Black and Rebecca Yarros.

On Writing House of Dragons

by K.A. Linde

Not all books start out from a stroke of genius. There isn’t always one moment that you can point to and say, “Ah ha! That’s it!” House of Dragons was a quieter book for me when the idea struck me. It was a mouse creeping into the house at night nibbling on a piece of cheese. It was a half-Fae girl whose father was a prince while she was also an orphan. It was a dark Fae prince who escaped his shielded world to enter a dragon tournament to regain his honor. It was a world run by a government of dragon riders.

Truth be told, Kerrigan and Fordham appeared fully formed on the pages of another book before they ever reached their own. And they were both so magnetic and endearing that I almost put the other book aside to immediately start working on their own tale. It was 2017 when they first appeared but 2020 before I could write and release them and now 2025 when we get a whole new world of readers to enjoy their story.

It’s within fantasy that I’m able to process my own feelings on more difficult topics. One of my favorite things about fantasy novels is that we can take modern issues and remove the parts that connect it to our world. Then we can wrap around new trappings of conflict and show what could have been.

I do that in House of Dragons by following a half-Fae girl who is villainized for having magic in a world where only full fae should be powerful. A government that only speaks for the fae and refuse to allow her to join them. A country divided.

Further I wanted to give you a glimpse of city life. Where there was no real escape from the government, who used dragons as enforcers, but who you also respected despite many disappointments. This is a journey story, but it isn’t a journey story. The characters growth isn’t because of the change of scenery but because they are forced to reconcile with a new world in the one where they already exist in.

But most of all, I wanted to write dragons. Who doesn’t like dragons? Specifically—as no surprise to anyone who knows me with my philosophy and political science degrees—I wanted to write dragons who were part of the government. I wanted there to be bondings with their humans and fierce unmatched loyalty. Plus, dragon riding!

So for the new readers, I hope you enjoy all the fun pieces that make up this intricate world. There’s political intrigue, magic, mayhem, and even some romance. More to come as you go too! And if you loved House of Dragons before, there’s even a bonus scene from Fordham’s point of view at the end!

Drop into your royal house and hold on tight to your dragon. The House of Dragons is here.

If you love dragons as much as I do, might I recommend some books:

To Shape A Dragon’s Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose – An indigenous girl bonds a dragon, but the colonizers are displeased. Despite it, they allow her to enter a prestigious dragon school. This really unpacks colloquialism, has such a unique voice, and did I mention a lot of dragons?

Dawn of the Dragons by Mari Mancusi – A prequel to her hit New Dragon City where humans and dragons have to live together in a our world where dragon fire is seriously deadly. A human and a dragon have to work together in the hopes of bringing peace.

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman – A classic dragon tale where dragons have learned to shape shift into humans and hold court. At the anniversary of the treaty between them, Seraphina is hiding a major secret that could upend everything!

His Majesty’s Dragon by Naomi Novik – a regency sea captain discovers a dragon’s egg. When it opens and imprints on him, he has to save its life and becomes it’s bonded rider despite no one wanting him to do so. A thrilling military novel with dragons!

This list would be incomplete without the original dragon book that we all know and love Pern by Anne McCaffrey and of course, the book that needs no introduction in this list Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros.

Happy reading!

House of Dragons is due for publication 25th September from Tor Bramble. You can pre-order your copy from Bookshop.org
