Laura M. Hughes

Laura works as a freelance editor beneath the grey, pigeon-filled skies of northern England. When she isn’t working on a manuscript or writing for the Hive, you're most likely to find her on Twitter, playing Dragon Age, or hoarding polyhedral dice. Laura also writes LitRPG under the pen name Demi Harper; her first novel, GOD OF GNOMES, was published in September 2019. She created The Fantasy Hive in 2017; her sanity has been steadily disintegrating ever since.

Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

Having read several Terry Pratchett novels before I had a fairly reasonable idea of what I was getting myself into with Good Omens. I expected quirky humour, strange ...

The Emperor’s Blades by Brian Staveley

I have to admit, I very nearly didn’t make it past the first 100 pages of The Emperor’s Blades. An intriguing prologue and opening chapter were quickly followed ...

    Red Moon by Benjamin Percy

I’m not generally a huge fan of paranormal fiction, but Red Moon – a dystopian, post-apocalyptic horror-thriller – isn’t half bad. Set in something close to the present-day ...

The Coldest War by Ian Tregillis

I was persuaded to read the first Milkweed novel, Bitter Seeds, a while ago, and although I found it a decent read it left me sceptical as to where ...

Brent Weeks’ Lightbringer series was one of my favourite discoveries of 2013. The second book in the series, The Blinding Knife, won that year’s Legend award, and for very ...
