Acquisition Announcement and Cover Reveal! DAVID MOGO: GODHUNTER by Suyi Davies Okungbowa

Our friends at Rebellion Publishing are well known for cultivating bleeding edge fantasy, science fiction and horror from exciting authors both new and established. We’re delighted to help them spread the word of their latest acquisition: a powerful and atmospheric ‘godpunk’ tale of gods at war in the underbelly of West Africa’s most populous metropolis, from Nigerian author Suyi D. Okungbowa!

Here’s what the folks at Rebellion had to say about it.

Abaddon books, Rebellion Publishing’s cutting-edge imprint for smart and subversive fiction, is thrilled to announce the acquisition of David Mogo: Godhunter by Suyi Davies Okungbowa, a powerful and atmospheric urban fantasy set in Lagos.

To be released in summer 2019, David Mogo: Godhunter introduces us to David Mogo, demigod and hunter doing everything he can to survive the aftermath of a deadly war between the gods on the streets of Lagos.

Okungbowa’s David Mogo brings Nigerian Orisha mythology to life with skill and humour, creating a reluctant hero you cannot help but love and root for, and spinning a tale that lets us know he has arrived…and with style.

More information on the book and the author below, but first here’s the cover:

Simple yet evocative, exciting and ominous, the cover art is by Yoshi Yoshitani and seems to capture the ambiance of the book’s setting perfectly.

Commissioning editor David Thomas Moore had this to say about the acquisition:

“Suyi’s a talented writer blazing remarkable trails across the genre world right now, and David Mogo is a fascinating insight into a world most of us don’t see – or don’t care to. This is a fantastic story that needs to get out there, and I’m honoured to be the one doing it.”

Suyi himself commented:

“I’m extremely excited that David Mogo and friends finally get their day in the sun. Glad to see more SFF from my corner of the world out there. Lagos is a place where stories lurk in every corner, and enough of these don’t get told—I am glad Abaddon is taking a chance on this one. If you’d love to follow Nigerian gods as they prowl the underbelly of West Africa’s most populous metropolis, you might want to keep an eye out for this one.”

And as promised, here’s a little more information about the book!

Since the Orisha War that rained thousands of deities down on the streets of Lagos, David Mogo, demigod, scours Eko’s dank underbelly for a living wage as a freelance Godhunter. Despite pulling his biggest feat yet by capturing a high god for a renowned Eko wizard, David knows his job’s bad luck. He’s proved right when the wizard conjures a legion of Taboos—feral godling-child hybrids—to seize Lagos for himself. To fix his mistake and keep Lagos standing, David teams up with his foster wizard, the high god’s twin sister and a speech-impaired Muslim teenage girl to defeat the wizard.

About the author:
